Throughout history, a sexual double standard has been prevalent in society. While there are many reasons for this, the most common are education, ethnicity, and gender. However, there are also many unintuitive ways that this type of trope can reveal assumptions about men and women.
One example is the age-of-consent law. For hundreds of years, laws have restricted a woman’s ability to engage in heterosexual sexual activity. While women are degraded when they have sex with a man, men are praised when they have sex with a woman. The age-of-consent law has been on the books in most states since the 19th century. Despite these laws, sexual harassment and marital rapes are still a problem. This is a reminder of how powerful the sexual double standard is.
The sexual double standard may be the patriarchy’s last best tool. As long as the Expendable Gender remains, there will be a need for separate roles for men and women.
