The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANÉ) program utilizes stickers to raise awareness of sexual assault. This program focuses on the holistic evaluation and treatment of sexual assault patients. During the clinical portion of the training, students complete three medical forensic sexual assault exams. The first two exams are done with a simulation model, and the final two are performed with a live model. Throughout the training, students receive supervision from a SANE-A or SANE-P, or a medical provider with experience in performing medical forensic examinations.
The program’s aim is to train nursing professionals who specialize in sexual assault. They provide trauma-informed care, preserve evidence, interview victims, and link them to resources. The program has received funding from the U.S. Department of Justice and Duquesne School of Nursing through an HRSA grant to expand the program’s SANE training and provide services in underserved communities.
The program has been proven to be effective in referring students to SANE. The program is now available in Washington, DC, and American University has sent more students to the program than any other university. The program uses sexual stickers to make awareness of sexual assault more visible and encourage students to seek help.
